Ferraris, Giuseppe (1791-1869)

Italian medalist and die-engraver.

Coin and medal engraver during the reign of Ferdinand I of Austria.

Ferarris was born in Turin in 1794 (or 1791) and died here in 1869. He went to Milan, where he studied at the Accademia di Brera and served an apprenticeship with Luigi Manfredini. In 1828 he returned to Turin and took over the post of engraver from Amadeo Lavy. Important works by him are medals with the portrait of King Victor Emanuel; a medal on the marriage of Ferdinand with Maria Anna of Sardinia-Piedmont from 1831 is also by him.
