The first synoptic inventory of the coin finds from Pergamum was published in 1913 in the collection of the Altertümer von Pergamon. With this compilation of coins according to emperors and types, Kurt Regling (1876-1935) produced over several decades the single reference work about the ancient coin circulation in the polis. Many years later, shorter lists of coin finds from the Asclepeion completed only marginally the overall picture of the coin circulation. Only the restoration of the coin finds from the Stadtgrabung (directed by Wolfgang Radt) by Hans Voegtli allowed the publication in 1993 of an extensive and scientific coin catalogue in the form of a monograph, which included the finds material from the earlier campaigns (1973-1981). The coins from the later excavation campaigns (1982-1998), as well as those from the Trajaneum (1982-1995 under the directorship of Wulf Raeck) were identified by Hans Voegtli and from 1992 to 1997 by Markus Peter, but are only documented as handwritten index cards.
After a break of more than 10 years, the systematic work on the coin finds was resumed in 2008 on the initiative of Felix Pirson (Director of the DAI Istanbul and of the excavations at Pergamum) and Christof Schuler (Director of the Kommission für Alte Geschichte und Epigraphik of the DAI, Munich). On behalf of both institutes, Jérémie Chameroy as a research associate at the LEIZA (Mainz) took on the new recording of the unpublished finds from the Stadtgrabung (1982-1998) and the Trajaneum, the identification of the additional coins from excavations and surveys at Pergamum and its environs since 1998 and of all the hitherto unrecorded stray finds. The authorisations for undertaking the excavations come from the Ministry for Culture and Tourism of the Turkish Republic. The cooperation with the Coin Cabinet of the Staatliche Museen in Berlin allowed the electronic recording of the coins in the interactive catalogue of the Coin Cabinet, with the aim of publishing the material as a digital catalogue. In addition, coin finds from the old royal excavations are published too.
The development and presentation of the website „Fundmünzen von Pergamon“ are due to Bernhard Weisser, Director of the Coin Cabinet, and his research associate Karsten Dahmen. The programming was carried out by Jürgen Freundel.
