The coin collection of the Frankfurt City library was trasnferred to the Museum of History in autumn 1927. The collection numbered 20,000 objects in total, of which two thirds were coins issued by the city of Frankfurt. Its head until 1932 was the librarian Clemens Ebrard. The origins of the collection go back to the 18th century, when on 12 May 1749 Mrs von Barckhaus donated 3,296 Greek and Roman coins to the Civic library, including a bequest of 1,000 guldens, the interest of which was to be used to pay for the librarian's salary. |
