	A French engineer working at the Royal mint since 1560 (though not officially on the mint's establishment). Hanged in 1578 at Tyburn for producing counterfeits. In 1572 he lost a trial with his maschinery against traditional coin striking methods at the mint. Lit.: M. E. Snodgrass, Coins and Currency. An Historical Encyclopedia (2019) 63; C. E. Challis, A new history of the Royal mint (1992) 250-251. 256; Forrer IV (1909) 48-49 (the individual executed might actually have been Phillip Mestrell, hanged in 1569).
