Person

Name

Antonius Apellas

Archon in Aphrodisias/Caria between c. AD 254 and 260.

Antonius Apellas' name appears on coins minted during the (early) reign of Gallienus, always in combination with his title archon.

He maybe identical with one Marcus Aurelius Venidius Apellas who is attested in inscriptions and who was responsible for the erection of a monument honouring the Roman governor Marcus Aurelius Diogenes, see D. MacDonald, The Coinage of Aphrodisias (1992) p. 42 no. 41 and p. 142 no. 222.

J.-S. Balzat et al. (eds.), Lexicon of Greek Personal Names V B. Coastal Asia Minor (2013) on the contrary distinguish two individuals, on p. 36 s. v. Apellas, no. 15 (c. AD 254-260) the "numismatic" Apellas, and on p. 36 s. v. Apellas, no. 14 (c. AD 253-260) the man attested epigraphically.

The link from LGPN used here below is the one referring to the Apellas appearing on coins (V5b-2126).

Lit.: W. Leschhorn, Lexikon der Aufschriften auf griechischen Münzen II (2009) p. 333 s. v. Apellas (AD 253-268).
