Name

Rentsch, Hans

Also know as Hans reps. Johann Rentzsch.

Mintwarden in Bayreuth from 1620 to 1621. Mintmaster in Kulmbach in 1621, Amberg from 1621 to 1622, Erlangen from 1621 to 1622, Baiersdorf in 1622, Gundelfingen from 1622 to 1623, and Kallmünz from 1624 to 1625.

Born in 1595/96 in Gräfenthal/Thuringia. Since his youth Rentsch worked as a sampler, probably he already was working in the mint of Gräfenthal before 1620. From 1621 he worked closely together with Jonas Riedel, another mint-master, with whom he operated the mints in Kulmbach, Bayreuth and Erlangen. In November 1621 they bought the upper Palatinate mint in Amberg from the mint-master Nikolaus Fischer, who bought it back on 10.01.1622.

At the end of 1621 Rentsch stopped working in the franconian and upper-palatinian mints, and became mintmaster for the Duke of Palatinate-Neuburg in the mints of Gundelfingen, Höchsstadt an der Donau and Stockau. There Rentsch was arrested and arraigned for infidelity, and was sentenced to death, but luckily received a ducal pardon. In August 1624 he made a contract with the Amberg mint mints-master Geißler over collaboration in the mint of Kallmünz, but this arrangement broke up quickly.

Afterwards Rentsch moved back to Thuringia.
