Alwin Wilhelm Otto Franke was a sinologist. Franke worked initially an interpreter, and susequently held the first German chair for Languages and History of East Asia at the Colonial Institute in Hamburg from 1910. He became a professor for Sinology at the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin, teaching there from 1923 to 1931. In 1923 he was accepted as a full member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences.
