Name

Böhm, Joseph Daniel (16.03.1794 - 15.08.1865)

Austrian sculptor, medalist, engraver, die cutter, stone cutter, chamber medallist and director of the engraving academy at the k.k. Hauptmünzamt (Imperial an Royal Central Mint) in Vienna, art collector

Born in 1794 in Wallendorf in Hungary (today: Spišské Vlachy, north-eastern Slovakia), Joseph Daniel Boehm came to Vienna after a short commercial apprenticeship and training in drawing. In 1813 he began training at the Academy of Fine Arts, after which he produced his first portrait medals.

In 1821 and 1825 Böhm was in Rome, among others with the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844). Under the direction of the painter Ludwig Ferdinand Schnorr von Carolsfeld (1788-1853) Boehm participated in the decorative sculptural design of the dining hall of Archduke Johann's agricultural model estate "Brandhof" in Styria.

Afterwards first commissions for portrait medals of the Viennese court - among others 1830 coronation of Ferdinand I as the younger King of Hungary. 1831 Appointment as k.k. Chamber Medalist and 1835 Director of the Academy of Engraving. In addition to his work as a medallist, Boehm also became important for his extensive art collection and for his approach to art and art history. As a chamber medallist, he was responsible for most of the medals required for the Viennese court and delivered meticulous medals, most of which were uniform in design. From the 1840s onwards he probably devoted more time to his art collection, which had grown steadily since his stays in Rome.

He retired as director of the engravers' academy in 1862 and died only three years later on 15 August 1865.

His son Joseph Edgar Boehm (1834-1890), also a medalist and sculptor, is represented in England by numerous sculptural works, was active at Queen Victoria's court, and is buried in St Paul's Cathedral.
