Schmitt, Joseph (17.04.1781 - 10.08.1866)

Medalist and die-engraver.

Schmitt was born in Vienna in 1781 and in 1799 became a provisional engraver k.k. Hauptmünzamt (Imperial an Royal Central Mint) in Vienna. He was sent to Schmöllnitz and Kremnitz for minting coins. In 1816 Schmitt received the third engraver's scholarship. In 1829 he became second assistant engraver and was sent to Kremnitz again in the early 1830s. In 1841 he was appointed third engraver in Vienna.

A medal for the revolution of 1848 was made by Schmitt.

Following his retirement in 1858, Schmitt died in Vienna in 1866.
