Name

Jacob, Hans (Johann) (um 1580-1635)

Originates from Saalfeld. Name also written as Jakob. Father of the mintmaster Hans Heinrich Jacob.

From 1614 to 1618 mintmaster for the princes of Anhalt in Zerbst, and from 1619 to 1624 mintmaster for the counts of Mansfeld in Eisleben. Appointed minmaster for the counts of Barby in Barby in 1620, where he had to pay a weekly seignorage of 500 Reichtalers (until 1623). From 1619 to 1622, mintmaster for the Dukes of Saxonia-Altenburg in Saalfeld. At the same time, he was also the superintendent of all Altenburg kipper mints. Due to his simultaneous activities, he often had himself represented by mintmasters, which is why Bornemann (1927) p. 98 note 1 also refers to him as a mint leaseholder. Only the coarse varieties were minted by him, the smaller varieties he had minted by employed mint masters.

From the end of 1620 until spring 1621 Jacob apparently again was a mintmaster in Zerbst, while continuing his work in Barby.

Mintmaster in Dresden between 1624 and 1635.

He signs with his initials H-I or a mintmasters-tool (Zainhaken), either one or two crossed ones.
