Austrian chemist. Carl Auer von Welsbach studied chemistry in Vienna and Heidelberg and conducted research into rare-earth metals. In 1882, after completing his doctorate, he returned to Vienna and began working at Adolf von Lieben’s institute. In 1885, he achieved commercial success with the invention and patenting of the gas-filament lamp. Auer von Welsbach also worked on incandescent lamps: in 1898, he patented the first practical metal-filament lamp. Auer von Welsbach died in Vienna in 1929. His portrait appears on the 20-Schilling note from 1956. |
