Daffinger, Moritz (25.01.1790 - 21.08.1849) |
Austrian painter and sculptor. Moritz Daffinger began his apprenticeship at the k.k. Porzellanmanufaktur at the age of 11, and later studied porcelain and portrait painting under Heinrich Friedrich Füger at the Academy of Fine Arts. From 1812, he worked as a portrait painter for Clemens Wenzel Lothar Metternich and increasingly devoted himself to flower painting. From 1836, Daffinger was primarily responsible for Princess Melanie von Metternich’s portrait collection. He died in 1849 during the cholera epidemic in Vienna. His works mainly comprise portraits, floral and landscape paintings. They are among the most significant works of the first half of the 19th century in Vienna and influenced numerous subsequent artists. Daffinger’s portrait appears on the 20-Schilling banknote issued in 1988. |
