From 1872 to 1879 von Usedom was the director general of the Royal Museums. Created count in 1862. During his time in office some of the gerates acquisitions of the Münzkabinett Berlin took place (General Generals Charles Richard Fox in 1873 and Austrian ambassador and General Anton Prokesch Graf von Osten in 1875).
