Name

Chaleas/Chaleos

Chaleas or Chaleos. Magistrate in Aegae/Aeolis during the reign of Claudius.

His name does appear on coins with the portrait of  Claudius (ΑΠΟΛΛΟΔΩΡΟΥ ΠΟ ΥΙΟΥ ΧΑΛΕΟΥ ΤΟ Β) and Germanicus (ΧΑΛΕΟΥ) in AD  43-48, presumably referring to the same individual. The proper reading of the name is not clear, it is quite possible to read „Apollodoros, son of Publius (or son of the City), Chaeleos (or Chaleas)“, too. In additon, it is not clear which office was held, here for the second time (ΤΟ Β).

Lit.: RPC I p. 412 with commentary on the name (nos. 2429 and 2431); W. Leschhorn, Lexikon der Aufschriften auf griechischen Münzen II (2009) p. 888 s. v. Chaleas (AD 43-48).
