Engelgroschen (Schreckenberger)

Information

The Engelgroschen was introduced in 1498 and was given its name after the Schreckenberg near Annaberg in Saxony, where teh silver used for striking these coins originated from. The Engelgroschen was valued as three Zinsgroschen and represent a step away from the simple Groschen (groat) toward the Guldengroschen (Thaler), which was struck in Saxony starting in 1500. The production of Engelgroschen stopped in 1571.
