Schneider, Prof. Dr. Alfons Maria (16.06.1896 - 04.10.1952) |
German archaeologist and byzantinist. Professor at the Universities of Freiburg, Göttingen, and Munich. Schneider took part in various excavations in the Near East, including those at Mamre/Palastine between 1926 and 1928. Schneider was responsible for the identification of the coins found there, and was given about a third of those coins by Andreas Evaristus Mader later. When Schneider died in Aleppo on 4 October 1952 these coins were given to the Institute of Christian Archaeology and Byzantine Art History of Freiburg University. See E. Mader, Mambre.
