Marcus Plancius Varus |
Proconcul in the Province of Bithynia-Pontus during the reign of Vespasianus, presumably in AD 70/71. The name does appear together with the title of Anthypatos in Bithynium/Claudiopolis, Heraclea Pontica, Nicaea/Bithynia, and Nicomedia/Bithynia. The name does appear in Greek, too, lacking a title on coins from Apamea/Phrygia during the reign of Vespasianus. A M. Plancius Varus is also attested as a legatus pro praetore under Vespasian (S. Mitchell, JRS 1974, p. 27), see above. He is presumably the same individual as this magistrate known from Apamea.
