John McCurdy was an American businessman, who regularly stayed in Switzerland. McCurdy bequeathed his collection of 14 coins (of gold, platin, silver) to a „public museum located within Switzerland as shall be determined by my Executors (...) which would be appropriate for accepting my coin collection“ together with some shares. The Münzkabinett Winterthur was selected to house the McCurdy collection. The revenue of the shares was used to create the "John McCurdy-Fonds für das Münzkabinett" in 1991, which is dedicated to the acqusition of exceptional objects for exhibition purposes.
