Grillparzer, Franz Seraphicus (15.01.1791 - 21.01.1872) |
Austrian writer. Franz Grillparzer studied law at the University of Vienna and worked as a private tutor from 1811 onwards. From 1813, he was a trainee clerk at the Imperial and Royal General Court Chamber, becoming its Director of Archives in 1832. Alongside his work as a civil servant, he wrote numerous plays and novellas and composed musical works. His most significant works include 'Die Ahnfrau' (1817), 'Das goldene Vlies' (1819) and 'König Ottokars Glück und Ende' (1825). Grillparzer is regarded as one of the most important Austrian writers and poets of the 19th century. His portrait appears on the 100-Schilling note from 1954. |
