Prandtauer, Jakob (16.07.1660 - 16.09.1726) |
Austrian architect. Jakob Prandtauer is regarded as one of Austria’s most important Baroque architects and master builders. Although little is known about his training, his work in St. Pölten is documented from the 1690s onwards. It was here and in the surrounding area that he designed his first buildings, including one commissioned by Herzogenburg Abbey in 1694. Through his work as a bridge builder, he came into contact with the prelate of Melk Abbey, who commissioned him to carry out renovation work, including the construction of the new abbey church from 1702 onwards. From 1708, Prandtauer took charge of construction management for the abbeys of Garsten, Kremsmünster and St. Florian. Around 1714, he was commissioned to carry out the Baroque renovation of Dürnstein Abbey, the construction of the church on the Sonntagberg and numerous other monastic complexes. His portrait appears on the 50-Schilling note of 1951. |
