Gaettens, Dr. Richard (14.03.1886 - 25.04.1965) |
Chemist and numismatist. Coin collector from the age of 10. Dealer of coins and an editor of numismatic literature. Gaettens in 1912 became a co-owner of the Münzhandlung Albert Riemann (founded in 1910), which changed its name to Riechmann & Co. accordingly. The company was relocated to Berlin in 1941, then libary and business were moved to Löwenberg in Lower Silesia in 1942 (today Lwowek in Poland). The library subsequently was lost for Gaettens, and is now kept in Warsaw University. When the war has ended Gaettens moved to Heidelberg. The Münzhandlungen Gaettens of Heidelberg, later Lübeck, were run by his son Richard Gaettens junior. Gaettens built three subsequent collections of his own: firstly Mecklenburg, sold by Felix Schlessinger in 1931, secondly medieval coins of the Staufer period, sold by Bank Leu and A. Hess AG in 1959/1960, and finally medals, sold by his son in an auction sale on 1 April 1966. Lit.: G. Stefke, Obituary, NNB 1965, p 148; M. Kunzel, Der Sammler, Forscher, Kunsthändler, Antiquar und Wissenschaftsorganisator Richard Gaettens, Numismatische Beiträge 20, 1987, pp. 116-123, 144. |
