Became eighth Earl of Pembroke in 1683. The collection of Thomas Herbert, 8th Earl of Pembroke, was inherited by his son, who had greater joy in architecture and collecting art. The coin collection was published in 1746 (see below), and auctioned by Sotheby's in July 1848: Catalogue of the Entire Pembroke Collection of Greek, Roman, English, Scotch, Irish and Foreign Mediaeval Coins and Medals ..., which Will be Sold by Auction by Messrs. S. Leigh Sotheby & Co. ... at Their House, 3, Wellington Street, Strand, on Monday, 31st of July 1848, and Eleven Following. Coin from Lord Pembroke's collection entered the Münzkabinett as part of the 1873 Fox acquisition. Lit.: Numismata antiqua in tres partes divisa.
