Wigan, Edward (1823-1871) |
Edward Wigan, Esquire, presented a collection of Roman gold coins in to the British Museum in 1865. In 1872 a year after his death Rollin & Feuardent of Paris bought his collection. See B. J. Head, The Greek Autonomous Coins from the Cabinet of the Late Mr Edward Wigan: Now in the British Museum (1873). Later auctions by Sotheby's include: Catalogue of the Collection of Greek Coins in Gold, Silver and Electrum, and a Few Roman, Byzantine, English and Foreign Pieces in Gold: The Property of the Earl of Ashburnham: from the Thomas, Northwick, Addington, and Wigan Collections and Other Sources: which Will be Sold by Auction by Southeby, Wilkinson & Hodge at Their House on Monday, 6th Day of May, 1895. Through the acquisition of other collections such as Acc. 1879-1884 Sandes, coins from Wigan's collection became a part of the holdings of the Münzkabinett. Lit.: MEC I 414. |
