Merlin, Charles Louis William (1821-23.08.1896) |
Britsh merchant in Athens, Vice-consul, later consul. Merlin did work for the Ionian Bank, too. Either directely from him or via various auctions (1855, 1857, 1859, 1861 (?), 1864, 1869, and 1871) General Fox acquired coins, who later entered the Münzkabinett Berlin in 1873 with the latter's collection. According to Manville - Robertson (1986) p. 127 the pseudonym 'Captain Tobias Shandy and friends' of Sotheby's sale of 5 February 1869 based on notes taken by Boyne and FOx in sale catalogues refers to Merlin.. Lit.: H. E. Manville - T. J. Robertson, British numismatic auction catalogues 1720-1984 (1986) pp. 127, 405. See Y. Galanakis, On Her Majesty’s Service: C. L. W.
