Numismatist and coin collector. Georg Karl Wilhelm Philipp von Donop took over (and enlarged) the Gräfllich Bentinck'sche Collection of some 4,500 ancient coins. His father Carl Wilhelm Wolfgang von Donop (1740-1813), Lord Stewart in Meiningen, was a natural son of Countess Charlotte Sophie of Bentinck (1715-1800)]. An important source was Michelet de Ennery (1709-1786). Von Donop died without children of his own in 1845. His heir was Eduard von Donop (1797-1852), who sold the collection to Heinrich Cappe in 1852. Cappe sold Greek and Byzantine coins at an auction in Leipzig in 1860, but is not known what happened to the rest of the collection. Lit.: M.
