Roth, Dr. Erich (08.07.1932 - 29.10.1978) |
Medical doctor (psychiatrist, neurologist) and coin collector in Düsseldorf. Roth bequeathed his collection of 5,216 coins (2,837 in bronze, 2,226 silver, and 153 gold) of the Roman Republic to the Migration period to the Althistorisches Seminar of Düsseldorf University in 1978. Following legal challanges with his heirs the University was able to secure the core of the collection with its silver and bronze coins of the 3rd and 4th century AD, and one gold coin of Late Antiquity. All other gold coins and any other coins before the period of Septimius Severus went to Roth's heirs. An additional 70 coins were bought by the Institute with money provided by Roth's bequest before 1990. The Universites today (2015) keeps 4,698 coins of the Roth collection (including those 70 acquired later). Lit.: J. Wienand, Geschichte prägen.
