Name |
Caprara |
Attested in Smyrna around 1826, Caprara was a quite able forger producing struck 'ancient' coins. He later moved to the isle of Syrus, before being forced to terminate his trade due to blindness. Presumably most active between 1822 and 1826. Domenico Sestini was the first to identify Caprara as a forger in in 1826. His agent in Constantinople war the German doctor Dr Burckhardt [Kinns (1984) pp. 7-8], who presumably is identical to another forger's (Carl Wilhelm Becker) agent known as D. B. Lit.: Ph. Kinns, The Caprara Forgeries (1984) esp. p. 3 presenting the few known biographical details, sources, and a coin catalogue. |
