Obverse	+ ΘEOTOC bOHΘ IW dESP [Theotoke Boethei Ioanne Despote („Gottesgebärerin, hilf dem Herrn Johannes“)]. Maria mit Nimbus (r.) bekrönt Johannes (l.), ebenfalls als Büste in der Vorderansicht, dieser mit Krone und Stola (loros). In seiner r. Hand das Patriarchenkreuz. Über dem Kaiser die Hand Gottes, über Maria MΘ („Mutter Gottes“).
Reverse	+ IhS XIS REX REGNANTIUm. Büste des bärtigen Christus mit Nimbus im Segensgestus mit Bibel in der l. Hand in der Vorderansicht.

Denomination	Tetarteron (Gold) Tetarteron (Gold) Byzantine light-weight gold denomination with the value of c. 22-22 ½ carats. The coin was introduced under Emperor Nikephoros II Phokas (963-969) and continued to be struck until the monetary reform of Alexios I Komnenos (1081-1118) in 1092. During the eleventh century, the coin went through various phases of debasement, with the gold content plummeting in the 1080s.
