Münzkabinett of the Staatliche Museen in Berlin |
Previously with the Münzkabinett der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin (from 1918) resp. its predecessor of the Royal Museums (1868-1918) resp. the Antiquarium and Kunstkammer of the Prussian electors and kings. From the 17th century to 1830 the coin cabinet was one of four divisions of the electoral resp. from 1701 Royal collection (together with the collection of antiquities [Antiquarium], the Art chamber [Kunstkammer] and the Naturalienkabinett). In 1830 it became a part of the Antiquarium in the Altes Museum. Until 1868 ancient coins on the one hand and medieval and modern coins & medals on the other hand were managed separately. The Münzkabinett became a Museum in its own right (according to the Statute) within the Royal Museums on 1 October 1868. |
