His father's widow Christina pleeded with the city's council to allow her oldest son Micheal (Michel) to temporarily run the city's mint, and take his application for his father's post as mintmaster in consideration.

Appointed mintmaster in Wsmar on 13 May 1601.

Martens struck the last coins in Wismar possibly in 1611 and fled the city flieht around Estrn 1612 because of debts of c. 800 Reichtalers. Begged by his wife Magdalena Martens on 13 February 1615 he again applies for the office of teh Wismar mintmaster.

On 25 February 1615 Martens was appointed mintmaster to the mint of Franzburg. From July 25th he ran the mint on his own costs. On 19 July 1621 Martens asked for his dismissal.

His symbol are less likely two mintmaster's tools (Zainhaken) crossed, in each vertical angle a star [see Behrens (1909)], but more propably Martens did use a simple star in Franzburg.
