Name

Wintgens, Johann

Son of the mintmaster Heinrich Wintgens. Brother of the mintmaster Nikolaus Wintgens.

Also knwon as Wientjes, Winneekhen, Winnekhen, Weyntges.

Mintmaster in Kampen in c. 1615. On 15 April 1617 Wintgens was sworn in as the mintmaster of Mühlheim am Rhein. Shortly afterwards he was arrested while travelling to the Probationstag in Cologne and was taken to Düsseldorf. There he remaind in custody until 17 August 1617, when he was given permission to travel to Kampen for eight weeks. Wintgens never returned to Mülheim.

According to Jungk (1875) pp. 214-215 a contract between him and the city council of Bremen was presented on 19 March 1617. Wintgens was appointed mintmaster for five years, including the priviledge of free lodging in the minthouse. But he was to bear the costs of minting on his own. In 1619 he came under suspicion of money trade, together with his brother Nikolaus Wintgens. In 1622 the city council decided to dismiss Wintgens, but when he lodged a complaint, that in the five years of his activity he hardly had the chance to mint because of lack of any orders, the city council made him mintmaster once more. After converting some 4,000 Marks of Fürstengroschen into Groten, Wintgens left his position in May 1624.
