Name

Eisenbein, Thomas

From early 1620 to 18 August 1621 mintmaster in Freudenburg (Bassum) for Count Adolf of Tecklenburg-Bentheim.

From 1621 to 20 February 1624 mintmaster of the mints in Altona and Oldendorf (which were administered together by a single mintmaster since 1609 to avoid legal problems for running two mints in one territory [compare Weinmeister (1908) p. 420]. Eisenbein himself states in February 1625 that he had not worked for 2 years [compare Kennepohl (1927) p. 37]. This would contradict an activity in Schauenburg service until February 1624.

At the beginning of 1625 Eisenbein travels to Emden to enter the service of Count Enno of East Frisia. On the basis of a complaint by the silver supplier Salomon Hirschaider, he was arrested by archbishopric officials in early February 1625 when passing through Vörde. He was accused of having minted coins with too low a value, of having counterstamped such coins with the Bremen key (the emblem of Bremen) without permission, of having provided his coins with false names and coats of arms, and of having been engaged in money change. Eisenbein denied the charges and appears to have been released from prison in the course of 1625.

Eisenbein's personal symbol is a Zainhaken (mintmaster's tool).
