Person

Name

Scheffel, Peter

Scheffel in 1618 became leaseholder of the mint of the Archbischop of Bremen in Bremervörde.

At the start the annual lease was 1,500 Reichstalers, which was raised to 4,000 Talers in 1619, and finally reached a peak with a lease of 600 Reichstalers per week (= 7,200 Reichstalers per annum). Scheffel himself seems to have been active in minting only in 1618, since his mintmaster's sign is only attested on coins struck in this year.

Scheffel's sign is a monogramm of P and S, the P retrograde.
