Name

Fröhmel, Wolfgang (1595-)

Wolfgang (Wolff) Fröhmel, also written as Frömmel.

Born around 1595 in Altenburg im Osterland.

Mintmaster in Arnstadt from 1621 to 1643? In Gehren from 1620 to 1621. In Lobenstein in 1620, and in Coburg from 1621 to 1623. In Neustadt a. d. Heide from 1621 to 1623.

According to Fischer (1904) Fröhmel was the head of the mint Arnstadt, where he still was mentioned 22 year taking office. According to Leitzmann (1869) Fröhmel was in 1620 mintmaster in Gehren and changed to the mint of Coburg the same year. This is objected by Fischer (1904), who states that in 1620 Claus Oppermann was appointed as mintmaster in Gehren.According to Grimm (2004) p. 75 Oppermann was already appointed in 1619. On 10 October 10 1619 Fröhmel signed a contract with Claus Oppermann in his function as pit superintendent, in which they agreed, that Fröhmel would be mintmaster at the Arnstadt mint, but Oppermann would be in charge of him. In 1620 he shemed against Oppermann, who, as a result, was dismissed by the counts of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen and Fröhmel became mintmaster in Gehren. In the same year Fröhmel left Schwarzburg in direction Reuß, and in his absence he installed his son-in-law, Sylvester Schwantegel as his reprasentive in Gehren. There for the mint of the lords Reuß mintmaster in Lobenstein from 1620 to 1621 as well as in Greiz in 1621 and in Gera from May to August 1621. Leitzmann's statement is disagreed with by Kozinowski et al. (2005) as that they listed Fröhmel as mintmaster in Coburg from 1621 until 1623. According to them, Fröhmel was also simultaneously mintmaster from 1621 to 1623 in the mint of Neustadt an der Heide.

According to Kozinowski et al. (2005) Frömmel signs with the astronomic symbol of mercury. According to Grimm (2004) p.78, this only applies to his Coburg mint. On his coins minted for the counts of Schwarzburg, Fröhmel signed with a stemmed trefoil, according to Grimm (2004) p. 75. However, such a Mercury mark is also found on talers of the Reuss family, for whom Fröhmel had struck coins at the Saalfeld district mint.
