Name

Lefler, Prof. Heinrich (07.11.1863 - 14.03.1919)

Painter, graphic artist and stage designer.

Lefler studied at the academies in Vienna and Munich and began as a landscape and history painter, but then became a graphic artist and worked on decorative art designs for furniture, textiles, etc.

In 1898/99 he worked together with Josef Urban (brother-in-law) on the interior design of the Vienna Rathauskeller. For the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900 Lefler created a monumental illustrated fairytale. He then worked on decorations for the Vienna Court Opera and was artistic director of the interior design at the Burgtheater from 1903-10. In 1903 Lefler was appointed professor of history painting at the Academy in place of Gustav Klimt. Lefler and Urban were also founding members of the "Hagenbund" and both were responsible for the main design of the Emperor's Jubilee pageant in 1908. He then worked mainly for the Austrian Theatre and Costume Atelier as a stage designer.

Among other things, Lefler designed the 1000-kroner banknote of 1902 and the 10000-kroner banknote of 1918.
