Name

Andrae, Gabriel

Mintmaster in Weimar from 1620.

Andrae became mining master (Bergmeister) in Crawinkel in 1612. In August 1620, Andrae became mintmaster in Weimar, where he received a performance-related wage: For every mark of 12 Kreuzer (Schreckenberger) struck, he was to receive twelve groschen, which were always paid to him in higher denominations minted by himself. With this wage, however, he had to pay for working materials as well as labour.

From 6 July 1621 Andrae was also a leaseholder of the Weimar mint, with a weekly seigniorage of 550 guldens, from October 1621 600 guldens. In the spring of 1622, the seigniorage was increased to 2,000 guldens.

Due to the scarcity of minting material, Andrae was hardly able to make this amount through his work, whereupon charges were brought against him for "evasion of the minting fee", and Andrae was imprisoned. As no misconduct was proven against him, Andrae was reinstated as Master of the Mint, but he lost the 8,000 good Reichstalers that had been confiscated during a search of his living quarters, as well as a loan to the dukes of 12,000 gulden.

Andrae signs with his initials G-A.
