Merkens, Franz (1823-1905) |
Coin collector in Cologne. Collection sold by J. Hirsch, Auction 14 on 27 November 1905. Coin of the Gallic Empire in the Merkens Collection were contemporarily identified as originating from a huge hoard in Cologne. This erroneous attrribution was corrected by H. J. Lückger, Germania 3, 1919, p. 19-20. In reality most of these coins come from a hoard discovered in 1898 in the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Strasse in Trier. Lit.: FMRD VI 1-1 p. 22 and p. 669 no. 1012,7; H.-J. Schulzki, Die Antoninianprägung der gallischen Kaiser von Postumus bis Tetricus (1996) p. XIV. |
