Name

Westermann, Heinrich (um 1585-)

Born around 1585 Münden in Lower Saxony (Hannoversch Münden), since ca. 1613 citizen of the city of Frankfurt am Main.

From 1619 to 1620 mintmaster for the Princes of Brunswick at the Northeim mint. From November 1621 Master of the Mint for the Virneburg line of the Counts of Löwenstein-Wertheim (so-called older line). This appointment shows that Westermann was also a leaseholder of the mint. Minting in Wertheim probaly began only at the beginning of 1622.

Westermann struck extremly inferior coins without knowledge of authorities, and did employ up to seven assistants for this purpose. Three of them were arrested and interrogated by the council in Frankfurt am Main in May 1622. Westermann was then summoned by the council and fined 500 reichstaler. Shortly afterwards, on 14 May 1622, the counts of the Virneburg line asked the Frankfurt Council for help in finding the mintmaster, as Westermann had fled Wertheim. During the search of his Wertheim flat, 2,000 guldens, 12 kreuzer (Schreckenberger), and 3 Brunswick kreuzers were found and confiscated. Westermann's family was detained in Wertheim and his wife had to pay his debts to the counts.
