More than 2,000 years of coin and medallic art images now placed in the public domain - transparent copyright statements for objects of contemporary medal art

All object images in the Münzkabinett's interactive Catalogue that show objects whose creators have been dead for at least 70 years have now been given a separate, individual rights label. This identifies such coins, medals, etc. with proof in German and English of the public domain of the object images in combination with a citation specification of the technical object proof and the descriptive text.
This means that the rules that have been applied to the entire State Museums (SMB) since the middle of the year (see link with SMB message dated 27 June 2022) are now also shown individually and transparently for the Coin Cabinet at the level of the individual object. These individual rights labels are now also included in the export formats that are used to pass on the object data to other portals such as Museum-Digital, Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek, etc.

A telling and shining example of one of the consequences of the abolition of previous regulations that more restrict use by others and the ban on non-commercial exploitation is the already begun uploading of object images from the Coin Cabinet to Wikimedia Commons with the kind help of the Institute for Museum Research (IfN-SMB).

Since June of this year, the Berlin State Museums have placed a large proportion of the object images in their online offerings in the public domain. See the SMB message dated June 27, 2022 linked below.

The public release of copyright-free object images also means, in return, that object images that are not copyright-free are now more clearly and, above all, individually marked and, in the case of copyright reservations (by the creator of the object), the object image may be replaced by a blocking logo. This is the case if the creator of an object has not been dead for at least 70 years and has not granted the Coin Cabinet, the Berlin State Museums, our partners in ikmk.net and numid.online, and the German Society for Medallic Art (DGMK) separate permission. Depending on the legal status (no permission, permission granted or registration with VG Bild-Kunst), this image block comes into effect and an adapted image label is provided in the individual object entry. If the author grants permission, we show the corresponding object image, but saving the image is prohibited. When exporting to portals other than those mentioned above, an image block also comes into effect.

In consultation with our partners in ikmk.net and numid.online, these regulations will also be gradually implemented in their online catalogues (local IKMKs). The administration of the various copyrights for control in the IKMKs is done centrally via the personal administration of the Berlin IKMK.
